FAVORITES STOOD OUT

round05 slideThe 5th round finished today, and, since tomorrow is a free day, players will have a chance to have a break and prepare for the remaining games.
After the first half, in some of the groups we already have the leaders. Some of them even achieved a maximum score. In the Open group U8 there are 2 players with 5/5 - Tsvetkov Andrey from Russia and Suleymanli Aydin Elshan from Azerbaijan, who will play against each other in the 6th round. In girls section, we have players with maximum score in even four groups. Under 8 Laura Czernikowska from Poland has achieved 5 points, as well as Anastasia Vuller from Israel in the group U10. In the group U12 there are two girls in the lead with maximum score - Gabriela Antova from Bulgaria and Polina Shuvalova from Russia. One more player achieved 5 points out of 5, and that is Aydan Hojjatova from Azerbaijan in the group U14.
In girls section U18 the first seed WGM Nastassia Ziaziulkina pushed as black against WIM Marina Baraeva, but the game eventually finished as a draw. WIM Irina Baraeva was better than Julie Fischer from France, and in the 6th round will meet her twin sister Marina!
In the group Open U18 we saw many excitements today. The second seed GM Vladimir Fedoseev was defeated by IM Pardo Simon David on the first board. The Russian got decent position as black in Nimzo Indian a3 variation, but it seems he has chosen the wrong plan and set his pieces on the Queen’s side. In the meantime white achieved a counter attack with e4 and activated his play, and all his pieces were ideally placed to attack black’s King.
Armenian GM Karen Grigoryan squeezed a victory against his compatriot GM Hovhannes Gabuzyan. After 98 moves he managed to convert his material advantage into a won game. Swiss FM Noel Studer achieved a nice win against Russian FM Maxim Lugovskoy, while IM Maksim Chigaev from Russia was better than Czech FM Tadeas Kriebel in a sharp Naidorf as white.
A lot is at stake for many players. Let’s see who will have more strength in the finish.

“CHESS SCHOOL 5” - gift for all participants

chess school 5

By tradition, the participants of the European Youth Chess Championship have been, among other things, given away the chess book “Chess School 5”. This is the latest, fifth book in the series whose publication started in 2005 during the European Youth Championship in Herceg Novi. This was followed by publications in 2006 and 2008 (Herceg Novi, Montenegro) and in 2011 (Albena, Bulgaria).
